Pulse INW team completes first DETOUR™ procedure in Washington State

Meet our new Olympia provider: Dr. Sara Wasilenko, Vascular Surgery 1

The first successful DETOUR™ System procedure done in the state of Washington was completed by the Pulse team at Deaconess Hospital this month.

Led by Vascular Surgeon Dr. Joseph Davis and supported by the Cath lab team – Cardiovascular Technologist Amanda Johns, Cath Lab Clinical Assistant Nurse Manager Forest Bell, Radiology Technologist Tracy Schweiger and RN Terra Candrian – the case was completed in the hybrid OR. The patient discharged home later that same evening.

The DETOUR™ System procedure is a Percutaneous Transmural Arterial Bypass (PTAB) surgery done under fluoroscopy (xray). This procedure bypasses lesions or blockages in the femoral artery by using stents. Those stents are routed through the femoral vein to restore blood flow to the leg, creating a new pathway around the blockages. This procedure offers patients with advanced peripheral artery disease (PAD) a treatment option other than open bypass surgery – an option that offers minimal trauma to the body, a minimal hospital stay and long-term efficacy.

Bringing this treatment to our communities is life-changing for patients with symptomatic PAD. This innovative treatment offers a safe, lasting way to restore blood flow and improve a patient’s quality of life.
