Pulse RN Travis Fox wins DAISY Award

Pulse RN Travis Fox and team at Capital Medical Center

Congratulations to DAISY Award winner Travis Fox, RN, Pulse Heart Institute catheterization lab nurse manager at MultiCare Capital Medical Center. He was recently awarded the DAISY Nurse Leader Award.

Fox is a skilled leader who goes above and beyond to ensure providers, staff and patients are well cared for. He is highly respected by everyone who works with him.

His nomination, submitted by a Capital Medical Center surgeon, demonstrates the difference his leadership makes daily, even in the most challenging of times.

“I hear from all the Capital Medical Center leaders, physicians and team members I interact with that Travis is great. He is great — there is no other way to say it,” explains Tina Soete, clinical director. “Travis will always ask ‘What can I do for you?’ and ‘What’s working well?’ He’s quick to give kudos and recognition for the teams, too.”

Nomination story

The surgeon who nominated Fox has worked with him at Capital Medical Center for three years. He explains that Fox became director of the cardiovascular labs when Pulse assumed responsibility.

“His leadership is exemplary,” the nominator writes. “Through very difficult circumstances in the last two years, he has managed to grow his staff, encourage them to take ownership of service line roles, and he has fostered a sense of community that is desperately needed in these challenging times for the system.

“As a surgeon here at Capital Medical Center, I have relied on him multiple times to help solve problems,” the surgeon continues. “Whether the solutions involve creative staffing solutions or standing up a new service line, Travis is always excited for a new challenge. His ability to align present circumstances with future goals and help his staff and co-workers see the through-line from where we’re at to where we’re going is outstanding.”

Fox has worked hard to keep the cardiovascular service line going amid many struggles — from the cath lab being down for months to hiring and staffing challenges, says his nominator. He’s also helping push Capital Medical’s first hybrid room into existence with creativity and persistence.

“He’s the heartbeat of the team here,” the surgeon continues. “He’s universally respected by his group, he’s collaborative with other units, he’s appreciated by the physicians for his candor and forward-looking mindset. Anyone who knows him and sees him knows they’ll be greeted by two phases: ‘What’s good?’ followed by ‘How can I help today?’ This is him in a nutshell — he cares for others’ well-being first, and then wants to get work done.”

On top of all that, Fox still looks for opportunities to provide clinical care when he can.

“I cannot recommend him highly enough for a Nurse Leadership Award,” Fox’s nominator concludes.

About DAISY

The DAISY Awards are presented at MultiCare hospitals and honor licensed nursing professionals in more than 2,000 health care facilities worldwide.

The awards were established by the DAISY Foundation in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who died at 33 of an autoimmune disease. The Barnes family was so moved by the nursing care Patrick received that they created the awards to recognize nurses for outstanding patient care, clinical skills and extraordinary compassion in nursing.
