Since 2012, Grace Mbuthia, Pulse Coronary Nurse Navigator, RN, has been leading a team of doctors, nurses and other volunteers to her home country, Kenya, to provide free medical services to the community where she was raised. Mbuthia and her team treat between 1200-2200 patients per trip.
Together with her husband, Festus Kamau, MD, PhD, Mbuthia is embarking on another medical mission on August 1, with plans to have their clinic open on August 5. Part of their team from the US includes members of the MultiCare and Pulse family: Christopher Bellotti, MD (Pediatric Cardiology), Marina Kopytin, CVT (Pulse Cardiac Cath Lab) and Vikki Roberts, CVT (Pulse Cardiac Cath Lab).
Their free medical clinics are a much-needed resource for the remote or marginalized communities, who may not have access to healthcare facilities due to their location, financial limitations or lack of awareness.
Mbuthia and team bring together health professionals from the US and Kenya to conduct limited health interventions. Some of the services they provide include:
- Medical checkups, diagnosis and treatment (prescription medications are purchased in Kenya from donated funds due to logistical challenges with exportation of controlled pharmaceutical products)
- Optical checkups and prescription glasses
- Gynecology services
- Early detection of common diseases in the population
- Referral of advanced cases and emergencies to local tertiary hospitals; the bills for these patients are paid for by the medical mission team through generous donations received via fundraising
