Dr. Arun Sridhar leads the JACC Scientific Statement on Consumer Wearables in Cardiac Care

Pulse doctor and team develop AI tool to predict risk of PCI complications
Dr. Arun Sridhar of Pulse Heart Institute and Dr Niraj Varma of the Cleveland Clinic led the writing group for a JACC scientific statement paper on wearable and direct-to-consumer cardiac technology. This collaborative effort included experts from the US, Australia, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Denmark, who collectively contributed to a comprehensive exploration of the complexities surrounding direct-to-consumer cardiac mobile technologies.

Direct-to-consumer wearables are becoming increasingly popular in cardiovascular health management because of their affordability and capability to capture a variety of health data. While wearables may enable continuous health care provider-patient partnerships and reduce the volume of episodic clinic-based care, there are challenges that arise from the use of these devices.

The increasing adoption of wearables necessitates a clear understanding of their advantages and possible downsides as they become more integrated into various medical practices. Dr. Sridhar and his team thoroughly evaluated the advantages and disadvantages of wearable technology.

“While recognizing their significant potential, we also provide a thorough critique of their limitations, knowledge gaps, and inherent risks. Understanding of limitations is crucial for informed utilization by patients, healthcare providers as well as policy development”, Dr. Sridhar explains.
