Better breathing for a better life

For adults with chronic lung disease, the simple act of breathing can be the hardest thing on earth. If you or someone you know is short of breath because of a chronic lung disease, the MultiCare Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program can help.

Individual treatment plans are designed for each participant; basic goals of the program are simple and clear: to restore each person to the highest level of independent function and to encourage active participation in their own health care.

Your physician will receive a summary of your progress when you complete the program. The techniques and skills learned in the program are designed so you can continue what you have learned. You will receive complete instructions for continuing your therapy at home, which are designed personally by our rehabilitation staff members.

Is Pulmonary Rehabilitation Right for You?

You may be a candidate for pulmonary rehabilitation if you have been diagnosed with COPD, emphysema and chronic bronchitis, chronic
bronchiectasis, interstitial lung disease, pulmonary fibrosis, or if you are undergoing preoperative and postoperative care for lung reduction surgery and/or lung transplant.

What is Pulmonary Rehabilitation?

A Pulmonary Rehabilitation program consists of a pulmonary physician, exercise specialist, respiratory therapist, nurse and dietician who collaborate to create a care plan designed for you.

The program addresses: medical management, exercise, breathing retraining, education, emotional support and nutrition to improve quality of life.
• Exercise: To help improve the function of your lungs and heart, and strengthening muscles used for breathing.
• Education: To provide you with information about your specific medications, treatments and selfmanagement at home.
• Emotional Support: To help you deal more effectively with anxiety and depression, which are common with people with chronic heart disease
that can interfere with daily living.

Nutrition support and weight management are also important for people with chronic lung disease. We can help with individualized diet plans that enhance your quality of life.

Goals

  • Decreasing your respiratory symptoms and complications
  • Helping you better understand and manage the physical and emotional aspects of your disease
  • Improve and maintain your physical conditioning
  • Reduce hospitalizations

How Long?

To be effective, it’s recommended that new patients attend 2-3 times a week, for 8-12 weeks. This can vary depending on your needs and your availability.
